After reviewing what the Society of Business Economists offers its membership, the Council has decided to launch a Professional Development programme.
The demand for applying the knowledge and skills of economists to practical challenges has never been higher. As the breadth and depth of Economics has expanded, however, it is increasingly difficult for professional economists to keep abreast of the most up-to-date developments in economic theory and practice.
Accordingly, your Council believes that the Society of Business Economists could offer a valuable service to its members by launching a Professional Development programme.
Such a programme would cover a range of specialist topics which would be of general interest whilst also proving immensely useful to economic practitioners.
The format of each session would be similar to that of our highly successful Master Class programme, now established for seven years, with distinguished expert speakers delivering an authoritative overview of their subject matter.
The benefit of such presentations, however, wouldn’t be confined to those physically attending because the presentations would be preserved for subsequent access by their being recorded and placed on the Society’s website so that those unable to attend will be able to watch remotely at their convenience.
Such a Professional Development programme, your Council believes, would benefit all members – and not just those at the early stages of their careers – by helping them to refresh and expand their knowledge.
It is envisaged that participation in this programme would be accompanied by Professional Development certification.
The Masterclass in Business Economics programme
Our highly successful Masterclass in Business Economics programme was first launched in April 2008 and has been delivered on a regular basis ever since.
Intended to supplement our early evening, monthly speaker meetings, the Masterclass sessions are held at lunchtime and generally last 1 ½ hours. Each session affords members the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills by hearing a distinguished expert address a specific subject likely to be of interest to professional economists with a particular emphasis upon bringing everybody up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.
The diverse range of subjects covered in recent years has included macro-economic and financial modelling, scenario planning, behavioural economics and finance, transport economics, competition policy, climate change and economic lessons of the 1930s.
Each session concludes with Q&A and members are also encouraged to give feedback and suggestions for future topics and speakers.
These sessions also provide the opportunity to meet other SBE members and professional accreditation is given for attendance if required.
